Wecome to Modern Snuff!

If you mention snuff tobacco, many people will not know what you are talking about.  Even when you describe what snuff tobacco is, most people don’t know anyone that actually uses snuff tobacco.  Compared with the other methods of enjoying tobacco, inhaling ground tobacco into your nose is quite rare these days.  Everyone knows someone who smokes cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, or someone who “chews” dip, snus, or loose leaf tobacco.  But, the use of snuff is a rarity.

It didn’t used to be that way.  Snuff is one of the earliest forms of tobacco enjoyment, and for many years it was the predominant means of tobacco use.  But, what is snuff?

Snuff is a smokeless tobacco made by grinding or pulverizing tobacco leaves. It is insufflated or "snuffed" into the nasal cavity, delivering a swift hit of nicotine and a lasting scent.  Some snuffs are mainly "natural" or tobacco scented, while others are flavored with additional scents.  Traditionally snuff is sniffed or inhaled lightly after a pinch of snuff is placed onto the back surface of the hand, held pinched between thumb and index finger, or held by a small snuff spoon.

Snuff originated among the native inhabitants of the Americas and was in common use in Europe by the 17th century. Traditional snuff production consists of a lengthy, multi-step process.  Tobacco leaves first go through a special curing or fermentation process, which has a large impact on the individual characteristics and flavor for each type of snuff.

Many blends require months to years of special storage to reach the proper maturity. Some snuffs are natural blends, focusing specifically on the natural scents and flavors of various tobacco blends.  Other snuffs are scented or flavored with a variety of spice, fruit, floral, or mentholated notes. Each snuff manufacturer usually has a variety of unique recipes and blends, as well as special recipes for individual customers.

Snuff comes in a range of texture and moistness, from very fine to coarse, and from toast (very dry) to very moist.  Often drier snuffs are ground more finely.  Snuff-takers learn adjust their technique to work best with each type of snuff they use, in order to have the most pleasant experience possible with each one.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to find a limited selection of snuffs at a local store, but to access a wider selection of commercial and artisan snuffs you'll need to order on-line.  It is also possible to make your own snuff.

The purpose of this website is to serve as a source of information about snuff tobacco, for new and experienced snuff-takers, and to express some of the joys and pleasures of snuff.  The goal is to bring together and archive as many articles, books, links, and information about nasal snuff tobacco in one place.
